Cold dark nights

This is the time of year when we stoke up the fire and cosy on the sofa, but what is the perfect beer for the Autumn? For me it has to be a stronger or darker beer than the ones we enjoy in the hazy heat of summer (unless you live in the north west of Ireland like me, when the haze is replaced with low cloud and drizzle!)

Here are 3 beers I have tried that I think are great for this time of year. I am not including any pumpkin ales as I have yet to try any this year, although I do like the style.

Northbound brewery Sticke Alt – German alt style brown ale. Lovely medium carbonation, malty and a nice bitterness. Lightly hopped and smooth, at 5.5% ABV well worth a try.

Kinnegar Black Bucket – See my previous review, but highly recommended if you can source it.

Chimay Blue – Belgian Trappist ale that is well worth trying. Dark brown with a brown foamy head. Slightly floral, caramel and raisins with a roasted malt finish. ABV 9%, 8/10
